Red Wings jump out early to win against Worcester

ROCHESTER, NY - After taking a loss on Tuesday in extra innings, the 38-25 Rochester Red Wings looked to further control their International League East division lead against the 33-28 Worcester Red Sox on Wednesday evening. Rochester would open the game swinging and control the game throughout from the mound to secure the win. "We had a tough night last night," said manager Matt LeCroy postgame. "We bounced back tonight, and that says a lot about our club." On the mound for Rochester would be lefty Jackson Kent, who held a 5.27 ERA on the season. In his first previous start against Worcester on May 23, he tossed five innings of three-hit ball, with one walk and four strikeouts in his first career Triple-A start.

Rochester would explode in the bottom of the first, jumping out 5-0. With one out, shortstop Seaver King would take Worcester starter Eduardo Rivera deep off a hung changeup, launching it over the left field bullpen wall. Two walks would follow in first baseman Yohandy Morales and third baseman Brady House, who would steal third and second, respectively, with Harry Ford filling out first base with a walk of his own. This setup left fielder Andrew Pinckney to scorch a 108 miles per hour hit off the bat, leading to a throwing error to first that sent both Morales and House to home. Catcher Tres Barrera would walk as well, loading up the bases again for second baseman Philip Glasser, who would deliver a two RBI single on a ground ball to right field. This would score Ford and Pinckney, solidifying the lead. "I feel like I did my job," commented King on his performance postgame. "I think I did a good job not chasing and not getting out of approach..."

Worcester would respond three innings later in the top of the fourth, chipping away at the lead 5-1. Crushing a slider inside, second baseman Mikey Romero would send it 395ft to the right field patio for a leadoff solo shot. The Red Sox would attempt a comeback in the top of the ninth, adding another dent to the final score of 5-2. Third baseman Vinny Capra would blaze his way to third for a triple, setting up Romero for his second RBI of the day with a ground ball liner, leaking into right field. Getting the win for Rochester would be the starter Kent, who earned his third of the season. He pitched six innings, only giving up two hits and a homer, while striking out seven and walking only one. Offensively, King would lead 3-4 at the plate with a home run and an RBI, while Glasser would go 1-3 with two RBIs on the day. "It's just going into it with a good space, with me and the catcher Tres (Barrera)," said Kent postgame. "And it was just going at guys (in the box) the entire time." The Red Wings now improve to 39-25 and are in firm control of the International League East and half a game back for a league-best record. Worcester steps down to 33-29, perched fourth in the division. Both teams will meet up for a doubleheader on Thursday, with Game One scheduled to start at 1:05 pm.
