Brockport, NY --- It was homecoming for the Brockport Blue Devils as they hosted the Class B Section V defending champs Monroe Red Jackets. In the end, Monroe’s offense was too much for the Blue Devils as they fell 46-2.
“Our group of guys, they're warriors," Brockport head coach Paul Carella said. "They were out there hobbling, playing through injuries. That does show tough character. People might not see that, but a real fan or a real coach definitely sees how hard our guys work. The score didn't indicate that, but our guys will rebound. We'll come back next week, and we're going to play Brockport football."
It was a highly competitive game throughout, but the Blue Devils brought it defensively in the first. Brockport recorded two sacks and caused three and outs on back-to-back drives. After pinning the Red Jackets back in their own endzone for a punt, Brockport’s Tyler Judd broke through the line and tackled Monroe’s punter in the endzone to give Brockport an early 2-0 lead.
That would be the only score of the game for Brockport as it was all Monroe the rest of the way. Brockport racked up 7 punts on the game along with three turnovers.
"Just got to watch film tomorrow," Brockport running back Brayden Scaccia said. "Get better and have a clear slate. You know, we're going to have some tough losses. What are you going to do? Just got to bounce back, that's the most important thing. Good teams bounce back."
In the second quarter, the Red Jackets offense came to life. Monroe scored three touchdowns in the second, with a rushing touchdown by Tajmir Mullins to start things off. Then midway through the second the Red Jackets got a touchdown in the air after quarterback Terrell Cunningham connected with Luis Falu for 37 yards. The final score of the quarter came from the hands of wide receiver Messiah Hampton as he took a Brockport punt to the house the following drive.
In the second half it was much of the same. Monroe went on to score four more touchdowns in the second half. In the third, it was wide receiver Styhles McKenzie-Baker has he caught an out route and made a man miss to take it to the endzone and increase the score to 26-2.
In the fourth, it was the run game doing the work for Monroe. First, running back Jermaine Montgomery took a dive 21 yards to the house and the following drive, Mullins crossed the goal line again for his second touchdown of the game.
Monroe put the finishing touches on the game after a bad snap by Brockport led to a fumble recovery score by Terrence Barner Jr. and made it a 46-2 game. It wasn't the game Brockport wanted for homecoming weekend, but it's a learning experience for this young team.
"There's going to be hard lessons in life," Carella said. "I told my guys after the game that you're going to take tough losses, so it's a life lesson. I apologize to my seniors, it's not the homecoming that they anticipated. I told our underclassman; you don't want to feel like that. That's why you do the work in the offseason...It was a tough loss, but you grow from it."
The Blue Devils are now 2-1 on the season and look to put this game behind them. Brockport goes on the road to face Wilson Magnet next Friday, Sept. 27 in a Class A matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
