GREECE, NY-- The Greece Olympia Spartans were persistent on the point of attack and it amounted in a 1-0 victory over the Honeoye Falls-Lima Cougars. In the 32nd minute of the second half, HFL's keeper scampered out from his post and attacker Blessed Likoke seized opportunity as a through-ball left Likoke with nothing but the ball in between him and the net.
"I had to read my midfielders," said Likoke.
Olympia had been making runs at the net all morning, getting frequent touches to Sagar Magar and Jose Rivera.
"I had to get out wide and then just execute from there," said Likoke.
HFL came out physical in their debut to the 2024 season.
"I don't think anyone got too frustrated in their head, so we just kept playing our game", said midfielder Dominic Pellicano.
Pellicano served as a field general for the Spartans today. He helped maintain possession and controlled the pace with which Olympia played with.
"I just always get the ball and look up and keep my head on a swivel," Pellicano said.
Greece Olympia moves to 2-0 on the young season.
"We graduated a lot of talent this year so we're going to have to have some kids step up and fill some roles, so I think gaining experience is gonna help us a lot," Greece Olympia head coach Robert DuPrau said. "Kids are playing hard, they're playing smart, and they're playing together. When you have those things, generally you have success."
Next week, the Spartans will retake the pitch on the road against the Batavia Blue Devils on the Sep. 11.
