Brockport Baseball wins SUNYAC Championship defeating Cortland in extra inning thriller.

BROCKPORT, N.Y.-- On Sunday, the Golden Eagles won the SUNYAC championship for the first time since 2010, after defeating the Cortland Red Dragons 12-9 in ten innings. Timely hitting late guided the Golden Eagles to the victory.


In the bottom of the first inning, Cortland right fielder Adam Mieczkowski singled to left field and drove in left fielder Matt Bruno to give the Red Dragons an early 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Mieczkowski scored on a throwing error by Brockport shortstop Justin Pangburn to make it 2-0.


In the top of the third inning, right fielder Zach Eldred tripled to right field and drove in catcher David Belsito to make it a 2-1 game. Later in the inning, first basemen Patrick Bigham singled to bring home Eldred to tie the game at two apiece.

In the bottom of the third inning, Red Dragons left fielder Matt Bruno hit a two-run homerun to left field to give Cortland the 4-2 lead.


In the top of the fourth inning, third basemen Johnny Genau brought in Justin Pangburn on a sacrifice bunt to make it 4-3. Later in the inning, David Belsito hit an RBI single up the middle which brought home second basemen James Houlahan to tie the game at four.

Two batters later, Patrick Bigham drove in Belsito on a groundout to third basemen Dylan Mackenzie make it 5-4 Brockport.


In the top of the fifth inning, Johnny Genau drove in designated hitter Ryan Voight on a bunt single to extend the lead to 6-4. Later in the inning, David Belsito brought home Justin Pangburn on a sacrifice bunt to make it a 7-4 game.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Matt Bruno hit a solo homerun to left center field to make it a 7-5 game. Later in the inning, Adam Mieczkowski scored on a throwing error by center fielder Nicholas Pastore to make it a 7-6 game.


In the bottom of the eighth inning, designated hitter AJ Fenton doubled to right field and drove in Andrew Michalski to tie the game at seven apiece. Later in the inning, Adam Mieczkowski singled up the middle and drove in center fielder Chris Bonacci making it 8-7 Cortland.


Two batters later, first basemen Matthew Kraft was hit by a pitch that brought home Fenton to extend the lead to 9-7.


In the top of the ninth inning, Justin Pangburn drove in left fielder Ryan Mansell on a groundout to second base to make it a one run game. Later in the inning, designated hitter Brian Tietjen hit an RBI single up the middle, bringing home Frankie Vanzillotta to tie the game at nine apiece.

In the top of the tenth inning, Patrick Bigham drove in Nicholas Pastore on a sacrifice fly to give Brockport the 10-9 lead. Later in the inning, Justin Pangburn hit a two-run single to left field that brought home Ryan Mansell and Zach Eldred to make it 12-9. This is how the game would end.


The Golden Eagles will play Rowan University on Friday afternoon in the first round of NCAA Regional Tournament.
