New York to face Heat Advisory

Updated: Dec 7, 2023

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory throughout several New York counties to last through Tuesday, August 28th at 8 P.M, with the heat index potentially reaching 100 degrees Tuesday.

Counties named in the advisory include Monroe, Orleans and Livingston, as well as the cities of Rochester, Medina and Geneseo. The advisory is also in effect throughout much of New York State and New York City.

According to the weather service, “a heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible.” They also encourage drinking plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.

New York State Governor, Andrew Cuomo, released a statement urging residents to check in on elderly neighbors or small children during the period of extreme heat. Officials also say those that have problems with their weight or with alcohol and anyone on medications may develop reactions to extreme heat. The National Weather Service also says "Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency - call 9 1 1."

Governor Cuomo wants to remind New Yorkers to utilize local swimming areas and parks in order to beat the heat. For a full list of local spots with access to swimming, visit parks.ny.gov.
