11/23 - GEF Round 1 Review

Updated: Jan 29, 2020

The Brockport Golden Eagles rallied back down 14-12 at halftime to score 21 points in the second half to take a big 33-28 victory over the Western New England Golden Bears in the first round of the NCAA Division III Football Tournament.

A big game for running back Jala Coad once again, getting into the end zone twice, including a 53-yard rushing touchdown to start the fourth quarter. He finished the day with 29 carries for 152 yards. We talked with him after the game in the post-game press conference.

Freddy June made his anticipated return after exiting the Cortland contest on Nov. 2, going 16-26 for 234 yards and two passing touchdowns to DaQuan Hubbard and Imhotep Cromer. He even kept the ball 16 times for 66 yards and one touchdown from 22 out. Cromer was a big key today as well for Brockport, especially on fourth down conversions, as he was able to break the plane numerous times to avoid a turnover on downs. Cromer had six receptions for 129 yards and a touchdown.

On the defense, the catalyst for the momentum on all sides was linebacker Lawrence Jenkins. Down 12-14 late in the third quarter, on the first play of a Western New England drive, Jenkins was able to record an interception. This would convert into Coad's first touchdown of the game.

Brockport will now have a tough test ahead of them next week, as they take on the #4 ranked Muhlenberg Mules next Saturday at noon.
