Song Review: "Selfish" - Stephanie Poetri

Stephanie Poetri is a new and upcoming artist and just released a new single “Selfish”. The single is expected to be a part of her EP, “AM:PM” and this is an excellent teaser that definitely makes you want to listen to more.

“Selfish” opens with a guitar leading the melody and then introduces you to the first verse of the song. The song then builds towards the chorus and the bass is then introduced assuming its lead as the underlying beat of the song. The beat is relaxed and consistent with dynamic pauses during the chorus. The song describes a relationship that is new and still feeling each other out while keeping things open. With lyrics like, “I know that we said that / We'd keep it / All on the low / I don't wanna be selfish / yeah / But I am when it comes to you”, Poetri shows that she would rather have her lover all to herself. She describes the internal conflict and hesitancy she has with her feelings when she sings, “I don't want to want you as bad as I want you / But I know that you want me too”. Her feelings of jealousy and wanting to have someone all to herself is incredibly relatable and is something that everyone has felt at some point within their lives.

Overall, “Selfish” perfectly sums up the frustrations of a new relationship that hasn’t formed its exclusivity. The soft beat within the song is smooth and simple and makes this an easy favorite for people that listen to pop. Its simple and catchy chorus is definitely worth hearing and will get stuck in your head for days.
