ROCHESTER, N.Y. - It was a mostly quiet day for the Rochester Red Wings at Innovative Field, as they were shutout 7-0 by the Worcester Red Sox. Rochester's offense was held in check, only recording four hits while 10 batters were struck out.
"You know, the offense had a tough time," Red Wings manager Matt LeCroy said. "We had a lot of early contact. You know, it seemed like we struck out a bunch, well we struck out 10 times, but a lot of early contact, pulling off the ball. It's just one of those nights."
Jake Alu was the most efficient batter for the Red Wings. He went 2-for-4 at the plate and both of his hits were singles. He also got to pitch in the ninth inning, only throwing one pitch that was a fly out to get Rochester on offense.
Jackson Cluff was the only one to have a hit that went for extra bases. He hit a double in the third inning and advanced to third base after a throwing error by Worcester. However, Cluff was caught in a pickle trying to make his way to home plate and was tagged out by Red Sox pitcher Quinn Priester.
Spenser Watkins was given the start at pitcher for the Red Wings. In 5.2 innings pitched, he surrendered five hits and one earned run while striking out five batters. Watkins now has gone 17 consecutive starts throwing in at least four innings.
"My goal every year is to eat as many innings as I can, and obviously give the bullpen as much of a break as possible as well as give the team a chance to win," Watkins said. "So, in the offseason, the goal is to be in a position to be as healthy as I can for 140, 162 games whatever it is."
Rochester's bullpen gave up four hits, six runs, four earned and six base on balls while striking out five batters.
The Red Sox drew first blood, as Roman Anthony drove in Bobby Dalbec on a single that went into center field in the third inning. Dalbec got on base after doubling.
After no runs were scored between both teams from the fourth through seventh innings, Worcester added insurance to their lead in the eighth. A fielding error on Rochester allowed Mark Contreras and Anthony to score, increasing the Red Sox lead to 3-0. Contreras and Anthony both walked to get on base.
Worcester stayed hot in the ninth inning. With the bases juiced, Anthony got a sac-fly that allowed Dalbec to score. Dalton Guthrie, who came in to pinch hit for Trevor Story, proceeded to hit a single that drove in Reese McGuire.
Things continued to spiral out of control for Rochester. With the bases loaded, Kyle Teel hit a two-run single to make it a 7-0 game in favor of the Red Sox. The Red Wings tried to respond in the bottom of the ninth, but two quick fly outs and a ground out secured the win for Worcester.
Rochester drops to a 71-61 overall record and are now 33-26 in the second half. They are tied for second with Syracuse in the IL East. As for the Red Sox, they improve to a 68-65 overall record and a 33-25 second half record. They are in fourth place in the IL East.
The Red Wings will host the WooSox tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. Jackson Rutledge (4-8, 6.88) will get the start on the mound while Jason Alexander (4-6, 4.59) will get the start at pitcher for Worcester.
