Song Review: "My Way, Soon" by Greta Van Fleet

Updated: Oct 22, 2020

Recently, classic rock-themed band Greta van Fleet released their first single in quite some time titled “My Way, Soon,” along with a music video, presumably to be released on their next album.

Reception of the band has been rather split as of late; some admire how much of a throw-back to the classic rock era of Led Zeppelin while critics of the band consider them to be rip-offs of Led Zeppelin, while jokingly ridiculing them as kids who say “they were born in the wrong generation.”

“My Way, Soon” certainly sounds like a song that would fit in with classic rock giants like Led Zeppelin or The Who; the instrumentation and sound mixing of the vocals are very similar to the era and the lyrics are surreal and vague, but have some poetic meaning to them. It’s no wonder why fans hail them as a band that is keeping the classic-rock age alive.

However, in defense of the critics, the song doesn’t seem to have it’s own style outside of having musical tropes of classic rock; “My Way, Soon” is a generic and safe classic-rock homage whereas the bands in that golden era they pay tribute to, like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, have their own distinct styles that separate them from each other.

If you’re looking for a song that captures the essence and carries on the golden era of rock/early heavy-metal music, you’ll enjoy this song. However, if you’re looking for something unique and new, you’re probably better looking elsewhere.
