High scoring game leaves Brockport Baseball overtaken by Wheaton College Lyons

By: Zach Harnischfeger

BROCKPORT, N.Y.--- The Golden Eagles were looking for revenge after losing to Wheaton in the NCAA Regionals last year to end their season. They went up against the Lyons on Monday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, it would be the same result as last year as they fell to the Lyons 12-6.

After a single and a walk to begin the second inning, outfielder Kevin Matos hit a two-run double to left field to put the Lyons up 2-0. In the bottom of the second inning, the Golden Eagles would respond with two runs of their own.

After a leadoff single by Zach Eldred, who then advanced to second base on a balk, first basemen Ryan Voight roped a single to right field that drove in Eldred. Later in the inning, shortstop Justin Pangburn drove in Voight to tie the game at two.

In the top of the third inning, outfielder AJ Guindon scored from third base on a balk by pitcher Matthew Colucci to go ahead 3-2. In the bottom of the third inning, designated hitter Patrick Bigham ripped a single up the middle and drove in outfielder Nicholas Pastore, to tie the game up at three apiece. The Golden Eagles wouldn't score again until the ninth inning.

In the top of the fifth inning, first basemen Anthony Teberio scored on a passed ball from catcher David Belsito. Later in the same inning, infielder Nick Croteau hit a two-run single up the middle to put Wheaton on top 6-3.

In the top of the seventh inning, infielder Mike Maher scored on a balk by pitcher Andrew Huffman. Infielder Cavan Brady later doubled to left field to drive in Croteau. This made it 8-3 Wheaton. The Lyons would add three more runs in the top of the eighth inning to make it 12-3.

The Golden Eagles would score three runs in the bottom of the ninth on walks by outfielders Quinn Mahoney and Frankie Vanzillotta and via the balk. Outfielder Sean Becker and infielder Josh Indeck recorded their first colligate hits as Golden Eagles in the ninth inning as well.

The Golden Eagles drop to 4-5 on the season after the loss. They will try and get back in the win column when they take on the Stockton University Ospreys on Thursday afternoon at 1:30.
