On Friday, April 17, pop star Olivia Rodrigo released the first single off of her upcoming third studio album, "You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl so in Love." This release marks the start of a new era, one that drifts from Rodrigo's signature purple color theme and one-word album titles.

Rodrigo found fame as a Disney Channel actress before releasing her first album "Sour" with four top 10 hits in 2021. In 2023, Rodrigo released her second album "Guts" which included her third number one hit for the song "Vampire." All three albums have been produced with the help of Daniel Nigro who also produces for Rodrigo's long-time friend Chappell Roan, and Amy Allen who produces for Sabrina Carpenter.
The theme of the new album is explained pretty openly in its title. Rodrigo writes in an Instagram post of a handwritten letter that celebrates the albums announcement, "no matter how hard I try to write love songs they always come out laced with a little melancholy." The 23-year-old is set to release the full 13-track album on June 12.
The albums setlist is reported to have the songs placed in chronological order according to their relation to the albums story. This has fans intrigued as rumors swirl that Rodrigo and her long-term boyfriend, Louis Partridge, broke up around 5 months ago.
"Drop Dead" was released along with a correlating music video directed by Petra Collins and filmed in the rooms of The Palace of Versailles in France. Versailles is mentioned multiple times in the chorus of "Drop Dead" where Rodrigo sings, "You were looking like an angel on the walls of Versailles." Fans also pointed out that the Palace was commissioned by King Louis XIV, who has the same name as Rodrigo's rumored ex-boyfriend and who the song is likely written about, fueling fan theories about Rodrigo's intention.
Rodrigo performed her new song live for the first time only one day after its release at Coachella Weekend Two. On April 18, Rodrigo joined Addison Rae's Coachella set as a surprise guest. During Rae's performance of "Headphone's On," Rodrigo joined her on stage to perform "Drop Dead" for the first time.
"You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl so in Love" will release at midnight on June 12, 2026, just in time for a "sad-girl summer." In the meantime, keep yourself updated on OR3 releases through our social media and through Rodrigo's own "hq" account, @livieshq.
