Brockport, N.Y.- In a matchup between two teams in desperate need of a win, it was the Brockport Blue Devils who emerged victorious, 63-54, over a depleted HFL Cougars team, which only had seven available players.
In the first quarter, Brockport would get off to a 9-0 lead and end the first quarter up 17-11 thanks to the play of senior guard Lydia Childs, who finished the quarter with 12 points to lead all scorers. The game became a back-and-forth, though, as HFL began to click offensively after a sluggish start, led by senior guard Shaye Angelo, who had four points in the first.
In the second quarter, freshman Olivia Keels took over for the Blue Devils down low as HFL implemented a “box-and-one" defense in an attempt to stop Childs. Keels finished the quarter with a team-high nine points as Brockport held a 32-26 lead at the half. For HFL, it was once again Angelo leading the way with 10 points as senior guards Alysa Richards and Kamryn Burdett also hit some timely shots to keep the game within reach for the Cougars.

The third quarter continued with the same back-and-forth action as the Blue Devils would extend their lead to 49-41 going into the fourth. Brockport’s offense saw balanced scoring led by Hannah Carpenter, who had six in the third, coming from two 3-pointers in the quarter. For HFL, Angelo looked to single-handedly take over the game as she led all scorers in the third with 13 points. An effective motion offense with off-ball screens allowed her to find space anywhere on the court as she kept HFL in the game.
After a sluggish start to the fourth quarter for Brockport, a Janelle Laureano layup would kickstart a balanced attack that allowed Brockport to close out the game. Defensively, the Blue Devils held Angelo to seven points, and no other players on HFL would score more than three for the entire quarter, leading to a final score of 63-54 in favor of Brockport.
“We kept working hard and did everything as a team,” said Childs on the mentality of her team despite the five-game skid. “I play slowly, am patient with the ball and read the defense correctly,” said Childs on her individual offensive game. She led her team with 22 points and was the go-to player down the stretch.
Leading the way for Brockport was Childs with 22 points. Hannah Carpenter added an 11-point, 14-rebound double-double, while Olivia Keels contributed 11 points and eight rebounds and Janelle Laureano had nine, as these four players contributed 84% of the scoring for Brockport.
There was no box-score report from HFL at the time of this article.
With the victory, Brockport avenges an early-season loss to the Cougars and improves to 5-13 on the season. The Blue Devils will be back in action on Friday, Feb.13, as they will travel to Batavia for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
HFL falls to 11-7 on the season and extends its losing streak to three games. The Cougars will be back in action on Monday, Feb. 16, at home against Our Lady of Mercy, in what could be a preview of a potential sectional showdown. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
