Mitski’s long awaited album The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We has finally been released. Mitski is an alternative and indie rock singer-songwriter. She has previously released 6 albums, Lush (2012), Retired From Sad, New Career in Business (2013), Bury Me At Makeout Creek (2014), Puberty 2 (2016), Be the Cowboy (2018), and Laurel Hell (2022).
The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We has a much quieter and warmer sound than her previous albums. The tense, angry scythe-pop is gone, replaced by softer orchestral arrangements. Mitski has said that the theme of this album is love, and many of the lyrics revolve around it. Each of the album's 11 tracks is beautiful, sad and emotional in its own way. The title of the album itself speaks to its contents.
The album was released on September 15 through Dead Oceans and was recorded in Bomb Shelter Studio in Nashville and Sunset Sound in Los Angeles. Mitski worked with Drew Erickson on this album, and he contributed the wonderful and soft orchestra and choir on all of the tracks. He has previously worked with artists such as Weyes Blood, Father John Misty, and Lana Del Rey.
The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We has been very well received by both the public and critics alike, with good reviews from Pitchfork, Clash, Metacritic and more. The most popular song off of the album so far is My Love Mine All Mine, which has been trending on TikTok since the album’s release. The song is a slow and emotional love song, in which the singer tells the move of her love for her partner, hoping that the lover will feel the singer's love even after she is gone.
Getting her start by producing her own albums for a college project, Mitski has come a long way. Her music is deeply emotional and moving, and The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We is one of her best albums. In its entirety, it's about how loving this place, this earth, loving yourself - is impossible.
